QUESTIONS ABOUT WILDLIFE ANIMALS
I found a wounded/injured animal that needs help. How should I proceed?
All animals that arrive for care at CETAS-SC are apprehended, rescued or received by environmental agencies, and Espaço Silvestre Institute is not responsible for this service. We only do the rehabilitation process for wild terrestrial animals. If you are in Santa Catarina and want to make a voluntary delivery or if you find an injured animal that needs help, is it an orphan or is injured, sick or suffering maltreatment, please contact uswith the Institute of Environment of Santa Catarina (IMA-SC) through WhatsApp (48) 98808-3372. For the other regions of Brazil and Santa Catarina, the phones are here . Let professionals assess the possibility of releasing each animal and carry out the work in a way that will effectively help nature.
I hate to see wild animals trapped! Can I release them in nature?
When done without technical assessment, the release of wild animals can pose serious ecological risks and end many lives, including the animal you are trying to help. In addition to the problems related to the spread of diseases, there are also risks of introducing genetic strains different from the local populations, introduction of exotic species, behavioral problems, limited territory and resources so that this animal can live at the release site, among others. To be released, the animal needs to be healthy, prepared to move around, look for food in its wild form, recognize and flee from predators (including humans) etc. All this requires preparation and is not as simple as it sounds. To avoid problems, do not buy or store wild animals. See here the contact of the environmental agency or Wild Animal Screening Center in your state. Let professionals assess the possibility of releasing each animal and carry out the work in a way that will effectively help nature.
How can I help a wild animal that is in captivity?
Keeping wild animals in captivity without legal authorization is a crime! Therefore, check if the animal is in an illegal situation with the competent environmental agencies.Remember that it is not possible to legalize a wild animal without origin. The penalties for keeping animals illegal range from fines to imprisonment. The penalty increases by 50% if the crime is committed against a rare or endangered species, such as the purple-breasted parrot. (Environmental Crimes Law No. 9.605/1998).
